Hey, I'm S. I write under it because I value privacy and security. Having worked in tech for the past twenty-plus years, I find some value in my anonymity.
I'm a (young) Gen Xer from eastern Connecticut. I now live in the Hilltowns of western Massachusetts. I grew up hunting, fishing, driving stick (oh what a rarity these days). I learned to change my own oil before I got my license, Pop made sure of that. Self-reliance isn't something I discovered. No, it's just how me and my siblings were raised. I've always lived that way as an adult but now I'm going deeper into it. It's not because I have doomsday fantasies, rather it's the quiet competence that gets me through the wild ice storms, the coming economic disruption with AI (let me tell you...as a software programmer, I'm seeing things that both excite and scare the shit out of me), and whatever else comes next. If you grew up in New England, you already know this mentality. We're kind, maybe not that nice, and we have the live and let live mentality that I adore. It's in our bones; space blankets in the trunk, extra pair of socks and gloves, quiet help without the need to be flashy. Being a New Englander is one of the best things about me.
Some of the things I'm thinking about:
- Seasonal preparedness: planning around the rhythms of New England weather and our four seasons.
- Practical skills: food preservation, emergency comms, home resilience, especially for renters (what can I say, I still rent at 47 🤦♀️).
- Economic preparedness: AI is going to change so much, especially in my industry. I want to make sure I can weather the loss of my job.
- Community resilience: mutual aid and building networks in rural New England. New Englanders are rugged individuals but we believe in community, we believe in helping out where we can help out (but we'll call you a fool if you make stupid decisiions).
Take it or leave it. 🤷♀️
